The World Cup 2022 in Qatar is probably the most highly anticipated sporting event in recent history. It is filled with prolific teams who are bound to compete at the pinnacle of the worldwide football arena. 

While FIFA has the best of the best, it also has the national football teams on the other side of the balancing scale. In this article, we listed down the lowest ranking national football teams according to FIFA. 

The Turks and Caicos Islands


The national team of Turks and Caicos Islands was established in 1996 and it became a member of FIFA in 1998. The team first qualified for the World Cup in 2002 but ended up knocked down so fast.

The Cayman Islands


First formed in 1985, the national team of the Cayman Islands. It is one of the lowest ranking teams in the FIFA World Rankings. So far, the biggest win of the team is when they compete against the British Islands in March 1994.

San Marino


Also known as the La Serenissima, the national football squad of San Marino became an official member of FIFA o March 1986. 

Their biggest victory in the FIFA World Cup is in their football match against Liechtenstein where they produced a total score of 1-0 in April 2004. Meanwhile, their biggest loss was in September 2006 when they were defeated by the national team of Germany. 

The British Virgin Islands


The British Virgin Islands national football team is one of the teams that are consistently low on the rankings. The team was part of the CONCACAF, the football association of North America. Their home stadium was the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground.

Anguilla


Known officially as the Anguilla National Football Team, the squad is the official representative of the British territory in the World Cup. Along with the rest of the entries on this list, the Anguilla squad is consistently at the bottom of the world rankings. 

The Bahamas


Known affectionately as the Bahamian Slayersz and The Baha Boyz, the Bahamas football team was established in 1967 and became an official member of FIFA in 1968. Of all of their appearances in international competitions they never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. 

Eritrea


Eritrea is a country in the continent of Africa and its men's national football squad was currently in the number 204th spot on the world ranking. Also known as the Red Sea Camels, the Eritrean team was formed in 1996 despite having already played in the African tournaments. 

Gibraltar


The national team of Gibraltar has established in 2013 and became an official FIFA member in May 2016. Their biggest win was in their match against Malta in June 2014. Meanwhile, their worst defeat was in October 2020 when they pitted against Belgium. 

Somalia


Nicknamed The Ocean Stars, the national football team of Somalia was a member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). First established in the 1940s, the team became official in 1951. The team was consistently on the low rankings at the 202nd spot. 

Tonga


The national football team of Tonga has no recorded date of when it was formed. However, the team was notable because of their victory over Samoa in 1993. Their biggest loss on the other hand was in April 2001 when they face off against The Socceroos.

Conclusion


On the internet, we always shine the spotlight on the teams that are highest on the world rankings but we never heard of the ones on the bottom of the pyramid. Now that you know the lowest ranking teams on FIFA rankings, that doesn't mean that these teams will always be at the bottom.
